Cascade House

Cascade House is a transformative renovation and addition project set within a private acreage landscape defined by mature trees and a tranquil pond. A busy family purchased the existing home with the vision of creating a modern retreat that could better support their daily lives while maintaining a strong connection to the surrounding natural setting.

The design strategy carefully links the original house with a contemporary addition, allowing old and new architecture to coexist in a dialogue of contrast and continuity. While the new volumes introduce clean lines, expansive glazing, and modern materials, the composition is crafted to feel seamless—forming a cohesive home that reads as a unified whole.

At the centre of the house, an interior garden introduces daylight deep into the plan, creating a calm, light-filled core that connects the surrounding living spaces. This moment of greenery softens the transition between the original structure and the new addition while reinforcing the home’s connection to the landscape beyond.

The property’s dramatic slope presented both a challenge and an opportunity. The design negotiates the grade by creating a leveled backyard terrace while opening the lower level to the landscape through a double-height walkout space. This level becomes the heart of the home, anchored by a soaring library that rises through two floors and provides a quiet retreat within the otherwise lively family environment.

Expansive glass walls dissolve the boundary between inside and out, allowing the addition to fully embrace the privacy and beauty of the surrounding property. Framed views of the trees and rolling landscape transform everyday spaces into moments of reflection and connection with nature.

The result is a modern haven where architecture, landscape, and family life flow together—an elegant balance between the character of the original home and the clarity of contemporary design.
